Club Memberships

It has been over a year since we announced that the membership in The Friars would be closed. With an aging membership, we always seem to have a couple membership slots come available each month. We have also been making an effort to bring younger men into the organization. For those of you, who would like to sponsor a young friend to the club, or any golfing friend, please dont hesitate to do so. You can find a Sponsorship Form on our website (www.thefriars.com). Simply clink on the Everything Else button on the Home Page and then click on the Sponsorship link. You can complete and return this form while online.

Over the past months, we have accepted 24 men into the club. All have been added to our Membership Listing on the website.

Golf Trip to St. Andrews

An email announcing our August 2006 Golf Trip to Scotland was sent to all members on April 1st. It took less than one week to fill all the spots. A Wait List is now in effect, so if you are interested in being placed on that list, just let us know with an email reply (Tom@thefriars.com). Also, if a 2nd trip to Scotland is developed, we'll let those on the Wait List know right away.

Fall Team & Club Championship

As reported earlier, The Homestead Resort at Hot Springs, VA has been selected as the site for our Fall Outing. Dates are October 9th - 11th. Invitations for this outing will be mailed to all members this summer. Mark the dates now, as The Homestead is a wonderful golf venue. As the spot where Sam Snead took up the game of golf, The Homestead boasts the highly ranked course - Cascades (#1 Mountain course in the US, #13 of America's 100 Greatest Public Courses, #75 of America's Greatest Golf Courses).

Double Eagle by Dr. Mack Brown

Member of The Friars, Dr. Mack Brown, experienced the rarest of feats in golf by scoring a double eagle on the Par 5th hole at the Tucson Country Club on January 23rd. The 5th hole is 510 yards and plays particulary difficult because of the depth of the green. The flag was located in the back of the green and what makes it even more impressive is that Mack hit a driver and a 7 iron! Dr Brown was accompanied by his playing partners, all members of The Friars, Steve Buchanan, Tom Dwyer, and Dr. Bob Johnson.

Definition: A double eagle is a score of three under par on any individual hole. Double eagles are extremely rare, more rare in fact than aces. To record a double eagle, a player would have to ace a par 4 hole or make a 2 on a par 5 hole.
